Health & Safety

Health and safety is at the forefront of everything we do

Our mission is to protect our colleagues and stakeholders, ensuring everyone gets home safely at the end of every working day

We're constantly improving our standards and procedures in pursuit of health and safety excellence. Our health and safety values are communicated and lived at every level of the organisation, creating a culture where every single colleague is responsible for safety.

Going home safe every day

In 2021, every company within the City group achieved a RoSPA Gold Health and Safety Award, in addition to a Gold Fleet Safety Award and third RoSPA President's Award.

Last year, we carried out over 760 audits to measure health and safety compliance and provided 2,700 colleagues with technical and health and safety training. Our colleagues are rewarded through established recognition schemes, such as our 'drivers of the month' initiative.

Performance Monitoring

Measure, monitor and review

We operate a robust system to continuously monitor and audit activity in the field. Formal health and safety audits are carried out by proficient health and safety practitioners. Outcomes from planned audits are reported and activity is tracked through to completion so our business leaders can make informed decisions.

Our business leaders make a target number of safety visits every year, which gives them an in-depth understanding of the safety-related issues faced by our colleagues, and an opportunity to reinforce safety values in person.

Responding to the pandemic

Our teams have worked tirelessly to support our customers in continuing operations during the Covid-19 pandemic. Hygiene is a vital focus area, and our cleaning teams supported Asda in being voted the safest supermarket to shop in during the pandemic (as voted by the Grocer magazine).
